You can’t handle the truth!?!

// November 13th, 2009 // Social Media

Recently as in the other day a very persistent social media whore decided to post about a lecture they were giving and asked for tips from his “friends”. I actually hid this persons feed becausec they constantly flooded my feed with their events, speaking engagements, and pointless updates as the everything they are doing, not to mention constant fan page invites. Social media marketers understand that spamming in social media is a big no no, and counter productive. it’s like going to a networking event and being hounded by a MLM groupie.  If you want results you need to engage your audience and promote good content of your friends before expecting others to do the same for you. There are some other social media marketing rules that I wont delve into during this post, but our buddy…we’ll call him Alan managed to break all of them. It turns out he managed to annoy many of his 1000+ friends. Well unknown to him his post asking for advice generated a comment feed that turned into a constructive criticism feed. Comments quickly came in about him referring to himself in the third person, more came in about him ending each pointless i’m gonna be here now post with “will you be there?”, and more came in about him spamming. So he decided to save face and deleted the comments. He had no comments regarding what he asked for but instead had a large thread telling him how to be a better social media marketer. Then he decided to delete it. BIG MISTAKE.

Remember that social media provides awesome “honest” feedback in real time and if you ask a question from the crowd be ready for the answer and NEVER delete the comments of your friends or you may get deleted as a friend. Deleting the feedback from your friends is a real slap in the face and tells them the you do not care about what they think. And if you don’t care what they think why would you want to be friends? A true social media marketer never ignores or deletes valuable feedback from potential customers. Not only are you undermining their opinion, but your discrediting yourself and shooting your foot at the same time. Be honest, genuine, and professional.
